Running Accomplishments:

I'm a 40+ "used to be"...

7 years ago had BAD case of frostbite and nearly lost my feet.  Stopped running (obviously) & gained LOTS of weight.  Started jogging again when local community club needed a coach and found out that exercise helped to increase circulation in my affected areas as well as decreased overall weight which helped to take pressure off my feet.  Still deal with neuropathy and Reynauds--but do not take ANY pain meds to manage the pain.  Gotta' love running!!!

SO, any past accomplishments do not matter....only that I can get ut the door almost every day and run another run.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Currently building base to lead up to traditional Marathon

Goals:

Have not yet decided on race schedule for this year, but am shifting focus from ultras to trying to nail down some shorter speedy races and a tradtional marathon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running for as long as I can & share the knowledge that God has graced me with by continuing to coach as well.

Personal:

Son:  Drew...currently runs for Adam's State!!

Currently Coaching:  Revolution Running

Day Job:  St. Joe's Veteran's Home

SO, to redeem myself from yesterday's embarrassing ascent up Cheyenne Mountain, opted to load up on the miles as I continue to make my way towards 100.

Had runners meet me at my house this a.m and headed out to Bear Lake Park, whcih is only a mile from my house.  VERY slow warmup/drills/stretching and the obligatory pitstop, then punctuated temp (after 4 x 30 sec pickups with 50 sec jog between to get the heartrate back up).

Having recently dropped my tempo pace to 6:09, I was somewhat disheartened to barely get to 6:19s today.  We ran in the park, whcih has some nice rolling hills to make us really have to focus, but I think my legs are a bit fried from the mileage this week and all the climbing that I have been doing.  Drew did 7 miles straight tempo ranging from 5:20's to 5:50s and made it look easy.

The rest of us did 8 minutes at tempo, with a 6 min jog, 6 minutes tempo, with a 4minute jog and then 4 minutes tempo.  My paces ended up averaging: 6:49, 6:29, 6:54.  UGH!  NOT the times I wanted, but felt good and had GREAT company.  SO, with warm up and cool down, hit 11.1 miles in the a.m.

FOr my night run, I headed back out to the park and ran a VERY slow 15.3 (and at times was going so slow I even was taling on the phone to peeps).  BUT, I covered some good mileage.

NOW, I am so hungry, I want to eat an entire cow....

OH MY GOODNESS!!! You deserve to eat an entire cow or at least a really big burger. great workout!!!

Your story is very inspirational, BTW. I do not think I have ever visited your blog. You are obviously one tough lady! Very, very cool.

How did you get frostbite?

Kelli, Karen is crazy. CRAZY!!

From Karen on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 23:47:18 from 69.171.160.153

Kelli- thanks so much! Not sure that I am inspirational, just blessed to have the opportunity to overcome soem hefty stuff. Frostbite occurred as a result of a mountaineering experience gone bad, where my "friends" kinda did me bad. Needless to say, I now deal with pain daily but have opted to use exercise and chocolate versus pain medication as a way to deal with it. I have been "off the blog" for a bit, but am now really happy to be back. OH, and don't listen to Burt (except for this once--cuz I am pretty sure I am crazy!)

Chocolate does fix everything!!! You race times are incredible, truly. you are one heck of an athlete, very impressed!

What are your race plans for 2012?

No worries, I never listen to Burt. ;o)

I heard that..

OOPS! i thought our Burt filter was on....

Kelli-need to sit down and plan out the year. Thanks tho--maybe impressive for what I have been thru, but not what I used to be, so sometimes it is hard. At this point tho, it is more about inspiring others and showing them that, hey, if I can get off my duff and train, so can they! I am probably pacing at Red Hot 55k (a visually impaired wounded warrior for his first ultra) and then again at Boston.

I would really like to do a half marathon and test my wheels a bit to see where I am and maybe return to Illinois for the marathon? If funding comes through, I really, really want to do Leadville this year! I am looking at Antelope Island, but have not heard back from the race director.

You are going mre mainstream this year to test your wheels, correct?

From Kelli on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 00:57:24 from 71.219.66.129

OH, for sure come do Antelope Island! That is a great race! The trail is not too technical, but you get some good challenge at the beginning (and again if you do the 100). As long as you are not afraid of the Buffalo (which I was!) It is so well organized. Which distance were you thinking of doing there?

I understand what you say about being frustrated, I can only imagine. BUT so many would just quit and sulk---you continue to move and inspire. And, those race times are pretty darn good for a person without your challenges. Plus, I see the 40+ age on there. I only hope I can still be a decent runner when I am 40+, and even 50. ;o)

The pacing sounds AWESOME!!!! Can not wait to hear about that.

I am doing the Utah Grand Slam (which is a series of 4 marathons, in case you have not heard of it). They add all of your times up for the 4 and award prizes that way. I am a bit concerned about running 4 marathons...hope I can pull it off! One more attempt at a marathon PR is in one of those races, just not sure which one. After that, I would LOVE to get back to the ultra distances. I am not a good trail runner, so I have to pick my races carefully!!! I have found a few that are not too difficult (meaning steep declines, lots of rocks, scary wildlife!!!)
